Whenever asked about our line of work, the most common response we receive is "I really need to make a Will". If you are one of those people, you’re not alone. In fact, according to research conducted by Canada Life in April 2021, 56% of adults have not written a Will.
A Will is a legal document that can set out your wishes in the event of your death. You can decide who will be responsible for dealing with your estate, record any funeral wishes, appoint guardians for minor children (under 18) and confirm who you would like to inherit your assets.
By putting a formal document in place, you can provide your loved ones with security and take away any uncertainties.
Although a large number of adults have thought about making a Will, they often procrastinate due to a fear of it being too expensive or time consuming. At Every Will Matters, we believe a Will need not be expensive and should be simple to do, which is why we are transparent with our fees and offer our clients a simple three step process.
How to Make a Will?
Step One – Will Meeting and Formal Instructions
We believe the most important aspect of having a Will prepared is getting the correct advice so that you can make informed decisions. During a comprehensive Will meeting, we consider your personal circumstances and look at what you intend to achieve with your Will. We also review your financial situation in line with the current legislation relating to inheritance tax.
Contact us today to book your Will meeting with one of our experienced Will Writers. We offer flexible appointments to cater for your work and family commitments. We can meet face to face or remotely according to your preference.
Following the meeting, we will send you our letter of engagement, which sets out the extent of our instructions. You need to sign and return the letter in order to confirm you are happy for us to proceed. We will also require payment on account of our confirmed fees.
We must identify all clients and to satisfy this requirement, you will need to provide copies of your ID. We need a form of photo ID such as a passport or driving license and something that confirms your current address, such as a utility bill or bank statement.
Step Two - Draft Will
Upon receiving your signed agreement and payment on account, we will prepare the initial draft Will based on your instructions and submit this to you for your approval.
Should you wish to alter your instructions, we can amend the Will and submit a second draft if necessary.
Step Three – Will Signing
Once you have approved the Will, we will send you the final version along with signing instructions for you to execute.
*When the Will has been executed successfully, you can either store the original at home or we can provide safe storage on your behalf (free of charge).
How Long Does it Take to Make a Will?
On average, it can take two to four weeks to complete and finalise a Will. If however, you have a specific date to work towards or if the matter is urgent, we can cater to your needs.
If you are thinking of making a Will and have been putting it off, then let us help to put your mind at rest.
